Le videocamere per uso professionale continuano a svolgere un ruolo fondamentale. Le prime, destinate principalmente alla televisione e quindi ad applicazioni broadcast, permettono la ripresa e quindi la trasmissione in diretta delle immagini, mentre le videocamere (in alcuni casi chiamate ancora "cineprese") sono apparecchi portatili che consentono di registrare filmati su supporti a stato solido come schede di memoria SD e microSD, unità flash USB, SSD (Solid State Drive) e schede CFast 3. Telecamere sono anche le PTZ e quelle di sicurezza.
Per scegliere una videocamera, ancora prima che la risoluzione espressa in Mpixel, uno dei primi requisiti da tenere a mente è il sensore CMOS che di solito offre qualità e prestazioni maggiori (soprattutto rumore più basso) tanto più è grande a parità di numero di Mpixel.
