Architectural lighting is a true “visual language,” capable of transforming urban spaces and enhancing any structure through a skillful combination of functionality and creativity. In this article, we explore the key technologies behind outdoor projectors, highlighting the essential features and advantages of using professional fixtures such as those distributed by Audio Effetti.

When used with intent, light becomes a powerful expressive tool. Just as in photography it sculpts the subject and defines its atmosphere and depth, in architectural lighting it not only illuminates a space but also gives it identity. Through various beam types, contrasting effects, and custom tones, a structure even an otherwise plain one can be turned into a luminous stage capable of evoking emotion, guiding movement, and creating a sense of wonder. Audio Effetti has often addressed the topic, but in this instance, we are focusing specifically on projectors for outdoor use classified IP65 designed for functional rather than purely decorative installations.

Illuminating architectural spaces: function, aesthetics, and impact

Outdoor architectural lighting serves multiple purposes. On one hand, it ensures public safety by improving visibility in pedestrian areas. On the other, it enhances the character of buildings and monuments, accentuating the unique features of structures and urban spaces, making them recognizable even at night. It is a discipline that intertwines practicality with beauty and serves as a powerful tool to strengthen the identity of a location.

Lighting fixtures can vary in shape, size, color, and intensity depending on the desired effect. They can create atmospheres, emphasize details, highlight volumes, accentuate contrasts, or harmonize the environment. The solutions offered by Audio Effetti represent the cutting edge of outdoor lighting technology for public spaces, building façades, places of worship, parks, gardens, and more.

Outdoor architectural projectors for every requirement

A high-quality outdoor architectural projector must first and foremost provide a well-defined, adjustable beam, with angles ranging from very narrow ideal for pinpointing architectural details to wider spreads for uniform wash effects across surfaces. Beam uniformity is equally critical to avoid dark spots or overexposed areas that could compromise the visual result.

In terms of output, the LEDs used vary by type, but a luminous flux of at least 5,000 lumens is generally required to ensure effective results even over long distances or in brightly lit urban environments.

One of the most noteworthy fixtures currently in the Audio Effetti catalog is the DVT LIGHT PJ-5, a versatile unit suitable for multiple applications. This new wall washer from the Danish manufacturer delivers an impressive 21,795 lumens, powered by 30 high-performance 25 W RGBW LEDs. Equipped with exclusive patented technologies that set it apart from other wash projectors on the market justifying its premium positioning it carries an IP66 rating.

Similarly powerful is the Evolites Architech 600, which instead uses 60 LEDs of 10 W each. While the manufacturer does not specify the luminous flux, it is ideally suited for illuminating large façades, both indoors and outdoors. This robust, easy-to-install fixture is IP65-rated and features fan speed control for noise management. The Evolites Architech line also includes a lower-power version, the Architech 150.

Energy consumption directly linked to power and LED count is an increasingly important factor for users. Compact models remain below 200 W, while high-intensity projectors can easily exceed 400 W or more. However, efficient RGBW LEDs keep operating temperatures low, reduce energy use, and offer an average lifespan exceeding 50,000 hours.

For locations without access to mains power, a solution like the EGO Professional Spotlight 18x10 is ideal. Sold as a kit of four units with a flight case, this compact IP65 projector features 18 RGBW 4-in-1 LEDs (10 W each). A major advantage is its convection cooling system, which eliminates the need for fans, ensures silent operation, and supports optional internal lithium battery power.

From a construction standpoint, an architectural projector must withstand weather conditions rain, dust, humidity, and thermal variations. An IP65 or IP66 rating ensures durability and water resistance, while materials like die-cast aluminum help dissipate heat and often allow for fanless operation, simplifying maintenance and reducing noise.

Finally, on the control side, compatibility with DMX512 and RDM protocols allows for remote management of intensity, colors, sequences, and other parameters. Features such as LCD displays, PWM adjustment, light source simulation, and dimmer curves round out the technical profile of a professional-grade outdoor projector.

Briteq COLORAY and COBWASH Series

Briteq’s COLORAY and COBWASH series are both designed for outdoor architectural lighting but differ in light source technology, beam characteristics, preferred applications, and overall design.

COLORAY was developed as a versatile solution for the professional entertainment sector, yet it also excels in outdoor architectural applications, suitable for both functional and decorative installations.

With a compact design and IP65 certification, these LED projectors are perfectly suited for permanent outdoor installations: building façades, churches, squares, monuments, and urban pathways can all be enhanced with powerful, precisely controlled lighting effects.

The flagship of the series, the BT-COLORAY 18FCR, features 18 x 8 W LEDs and a 20° beam angle, ideal for precise architectural washes. It offers advanced functions such as white balance adjustment, selectable light source behavior (halogen simulation or pure LED), and customizable dimmer curves to adapt to the desired visual context.

The series also includes models like the BT-COLORAY 60R and BT-COLORAY 120R, which use higher-power RGBW LEDs and a tighter 13° beam, designed for more focused architectural applications. Both retain IP65 certification for weather resistance and long-lasting outdoor performance.

Also from Briteq, the LDP-COBWASH 150TC and 60TC RGB LED projectors are ideal as wall washers for architectural installations. Their key feature is the high-power point-source COB LED, also used in the BT-COLORAY 60R and 120R. The main difference between the two series lies in the beam angle: 13° to 20° for COLORAY versus 60° for COBWASH. This makes COLORAY ideal for controlled spot or wash effects on façades and architectural details, while COBWASH is perfect for close-range wall washing and uniform illumination of large surfaces from short distances.

Additionally, COLORAY models support DMX/RDM control, while COBWASH units are DMX-only.

Investing in outdoor architectural lighting means choosing to “communicate” with space and, indirectly, with the people who experience it. It is a strategic decision that can redefine the identity of a location, enhance its value, and make it memorable. From historic squares to museum façades, from theme parks to modern buildings, the solutions offered by Audio Effetti combine aesthetics with reliability.
