Video over IP technology is perhaps the fastest growing in the professional audiovisual field and refers to the transmission of video (and necessarily also audio) + control signals over a standard network infrastructure, WAN, LAN, Internet and Wi-Fi. This approach represents an alternative to using HDMI cables to connect devices to each other.
The devices that takes advantage of this technology are transmitters (they therefore receive an HDMI signal as input and make it available as output on the Ethernet network using the IP protocol), receivers (they perform exactly the opposite function) or transceivers, i.e. bidirectional devices that include both the receiver and transmitter. In many cases, they also act as HDMI extenders as they extend distances up to hundreds meters using a CAT5e or higher category network cable.
In summary, Video over IP infrastructure offers advanced flexibility, scalability and deployment capabilities compared to traditional AV links. Products based on this technology overcome distance limitations and simplify the management of AV signals on standard networks.
