Le macchine del fumo utilizzano un fluido speciale, una miscela di glicole e acqua che viene riscaldata fino a trasformarsi in vapore e poi espulsa da un ugello, per produrre un fumo bianco denso in grado di creare un effetto visivo molto spettacolare. Si differenziano dalle macchine per la nebbia per il metodo di produzione della nebbia e la sua consistenza. Queste ultime, infatti, usano invece un liquido a base di olio che viene nebulizzato e inviato nell’aria. La nebbia che si ottiene è sottile e leggera, e resta sospesa a lungo nell’aria, a differenza del fumo riscaldato, prodotto appunto dalle macchine del fumo, che sale e si dissipa nella stanza. Spesso le macchine del fumo sono dotate di un telecomando per controllare il volume di fumo e la durata dello stesso.
